Jesus had a special relationship with the Holy Spirit. One that bears utmost importance in our daily spiritual lives. OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY - Several prophecies of the O.T. predicted that Jesus would be empowered by the Holy Spirit. JESUS' BIRTH - Both Matthew and Luke state plainly and unmistakely that Jesus came into this world through a miraclulous deed of God. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin, Mary(Matt.1:18; Luke 1:27). Because of this, Jesus was "holy"(Luke 1:35). JESUS' BAPTISM - When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, He was anointed by the Spirit(Matt. 3:16-17; Luke 3:21-22). It descended upon Him in the form of a dove, endowing Him with great power to perform His ministry. When He was led into the wilderness, He was "full of the Holy Ghost"(Luke 4:1). In the same manner, all believers should experience the baptism in the Holy Spirit to give them power in their lives and ministries. JESUS' TEMPTATION - After His baptism, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where He was tempted by the devil for forty days(Luke 4:1-2). Being full of the Spirit, He was able to resist all temptations laid before Him. It was God's intention that we never face the spiritual forces of Satan without the power of the Holy Ghost. JESUS MINISTRY - The Spirit anointed Jesus and empowered Him for His mission. He was God(John 1:1), but He was also man(1 Tim. 2:5). As man He had to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to fulfill His responsibilities to God(Matt. 12:28; Luke 4:1,14; Rom. 8:11; Heb. 9:14). Only as a Spirit filled man could Jesus live, serve, and proclaim the Gospel(Acts 10:38). He is the perfect example for every Christian to pattern their lives after. JESUS' PROMISE - Jesus promised to give this baptism to all those who ask. A promise that was first filled at Pentecost(Acts 2:4) and remains a promise for all those who ask(Acts 1:5; 2:39). JESUS RESURRECTION - By the power of the Holy Ghost, Jesus was raised from the dead and thereby proven as the true Son of God. In Romans 1:3-4, Jesus was declared with power to be the Son of God and in Romans 8:11, "the Spirit...raised up Jesus from the dead". Just as He depended on the Spirit for His resurrection, so must all believers depend on the Spirit for spiritual life now and bodily resurrection in the future(Rom. 8:10-11). JESUS' ASCENSION - Jesus ascended into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God(Mark 16:19; Luke 24:51; Acts 1:9-11; Eph. 4:8-10). there He received the Holy Spirit from His Father and sent Him unto His people at Pentecost(Acts 2:33; John 16:5-14). This outpouring then and now testifies to the continual presence of the exalted Savior. JESUS' NEARNESS - One of the Holy Spirit's tasks is to take that which is Christ's and reveal it to the believers(John 16:14-15). Most important is Jesus' nearness to us(John 14:18). The Spirit makes us aware of Jesus' presence and draws our hearts to seek the Lord in love, prayer, devotion, and worship. JESUS' RETURN - Jesus promised to return and receive His faithful people to Himself(John 14:3; 1 Thess. 4:13-18). This second coming of Christ is the hope of all believers(Tit. 2:13). The Bible reveals that the Spirit causes our hearts to cry out for His return. At the very close of the Bible, the Holy Ghost inspired the words, "come, Lord Jesus"(Rev. 22:20). |
